Well, They Finally Did It. This Flying Car Factory Just Turned On

For my entire career, I've been promised two things: jetpacks and flying cars. The jetpacks, it turns out, are mostly for leaping out of the water like a confused dolphin, and the flying car has been "five years away" since about 1950. It's the automotive industry's favorite parlor trick: show a flashy AI video, take a few deposits from gullible millionaires, and then quietly go bankrupt. We, the cynical public, just nod along. "Oh, lovely," we say. "Another PowerPoint presentation that defies gravity. Wake me when it's real."

Well, somebody poke me with a stick. Because XPeng - sorry, they just rebranded their aero business to "Aridge" (sounds like a new brand of medicated toothpaste if you ask me) - has apparently missed the memo on "how to fail." They didn't just show a render. They built a factory, switched the lights on and first units are already rolling off the production line.

And before you get all funny, this isn't just a "shed with some optimists in it." The Aridge facility is a 1.3 million square-foot giga-shed in Guangzhou, China. They've just rolled the first "flying body" off a genuine, modern, honest-to-goodness mass production assembly line. A line that, when fully spooled up, can apparently pop one of these things out every 30 minutes. That's an annual capacity of 10,000 flying cars.

The production capacity is one thing - but what really gets me going is the fact that Aridge already has enough orders to keep them going for years. They're planning to sell these things like they're Honda Civics. $280,000 Civic to be exact - and people are lining up for them like they do for Taylor Swift concert tickets.

So, what is this miracle machine that will finally have us living like the Jetsons (or, more likely, crashing like the Jetsons)? It's called the "Land Aircraft Carrier." Okay, that name has all the subtlety of a foghorn in a library. And yet, it's the most brilliantly accurate, least-sexy name I've ever heard. It's perfect.

Because this isn't just a flying car, that would be too simple. It's a "modular flying car." What that means, in plain American, is that you get two vehicles for the price of one. The first piece of the puzzle is the "Mother Vehicle," a colossal, six-wheeled, three-axle electric truck. It's an 18-foot-long, 6.6-foot-wide beast with 6x6 all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, and room for five people. It's basically a Cyber-pickup that went to finishing school and had an extra axle surgically attached.

This "Mothership" is a range-extender electric, using an 800-volt system, and it has a ground-only range of over 620 miles. That's actually deeply impressive. But its party trick is in the back. The entire rear end of this truck opens up, and nestled inside, like a billion-dollar baby kangaroo, is the other half of the equation: the "Air Module."

This part is the flying bit. It's a two-person, fully electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft -  the world's most sophisticated, and most expensive, drone. It's a multi-rotor design, all carbon fiber, with a 270-degree panoramic cockpit for you and one very brave, or very foolish, friend. When you've had enough of peasant-level traffic, you simply find a clear spot, deploy your personal aircraft, and whir off into the sky. The truck, meanwhile, just waits for you, patiently.

And here's the genius part: the truck is also your charging station. The "Mothership," with its massive hybrid-powered battery, can reportedly recharge the air module five or six times over. This whole system isn't a car that flies; it's an off-road mobile airport. It's a support vehicle and an aircraft, bonded for life.

As for flying this contraption, XPeng is quick to tell you that the single-stick control system can be "mastered in 5 minutes." This does not fill me with confidence. I take longer than that to master a new toaster. Giving someone five minutes of training and then handing them the keys to a 2,000-pound flying blender seems a bit optimistic. What happens when Chad from accounting, fresh off his "5-minute mastery," meets Brenda from sales over a crowded intersection?

But there's some serious safety stuff built in. There's all the usual "redundant propulsion" talk, meaning if one rotor stops, the others (hopefully) won't. But my favorite feature, by a country mile, is the multi-parachute rescue system. If it all goes pear-shaped, the entire aircraft can deploy a ballistic parachute, tested at an altitude of just 164 feet. So, if your "5-minute mastery" fails you, you simply pull a handle and float gently back to earth, presumably to a chorus of sirens and a lifetime of paperwork.

So, the big question. What does this two-for-one, sci-fi-meets-reality package cost? XPeng... I mean, Aridge... says they're capping the price at two million RMB. That's about $281,040. And you know what? I'm not even going to make a joke about that. That's the most shocking number of all. Is it a lot for a truck? Yes. Is it an astronomical sum for a car? Of course. But is it a lot for a certified personal aircraft that also comes with a 620-mile range, 6x6 hybrid truck? No. It's bafflingly cheap. You can't buy a new Robinson helicopter for that. You can barely buy a high-end Ferrari!

This is the part where my inner skeptic, the one who's been fed a diet of failed promises for 30 years, gets very, very quiet. This isn't a toy for billionaires. At $280,000, this is a toy for dentists. This is a price point that says "we are not joking." This, combined with the 10,000-unit-a-year factory, is serious. And deliveries are starting in 2026.

Of course, this is in China. The regulatory hurdles to make this thing legal in the United States would be biblical. The Federal Aviation Administration would have to invent an entirely new category of bureaucracy just to process the application. But does that stop me from wanting one?

Absolutely not. I want one so badly it hurts. It's the most ridiculous, audacious, and completely unhinged thing I've seen in a decade. It's an electric-hybrid, 6x6, off-road, aircraft-launching-and-charging-station-on-wheels. It's the answer to a question nobody asked, and I love it. Aridge didn't just build a flying car. They built a base of operations. And they have the factory to churn them out.

My hat is off. My skepticism is, for a moment, gently gagged and tied in the trunk. They're actually doing it. God help us all.
