The news coming out of the Old World is absolute chaos. I'm talking about everyone's favorite electric provocateur, Tesla. I love a good EV as much as the next chap, but sweet mother of pearl, the numbers coming out of Europe are grimmer than a rainy Tuesday.
Let's start with the big picture. If you thought Tesla was invincible, you might want to sit down. The sales figures for January 2026 are in, and... It's an absolute bloodbath. Across five major European markets, registrations are down 44% from where they were last year. We have blown past the "market correction" here - this is a catastrophe. The majestic stag that Tesla once was, tripped over its own antlers and is tumbling down a ravine.

In Norway, the land of fjords and, historically, Tesla's home away from home, the sales there have collapsed by 88%. That's nearly the entire market vanishing into thin air. Poof! Gone. Sure, the local government scrapped some EV incentives, but an 88% drop? The Vikings are turning their backs, and the Dutch are joining them with sales down nearly 67%, and the French have dropped by 42%. It's a proper shambles.
Now, let's hop across the channel to the United Kingdom, where things are usually a bit more sensible. Or not. Tesla's sales in the UK have plunged 57% in January. They only shifted 647 cars! And the salt in the wound: BYD, the Chinese giant, sold nearly double that amount with 1,326 units. Even Ford managed to shift 2,271 EVs. When you're getting lapped by the folks who built the Pinto, you know you're in a spot of bother.

What on earth is going on? Well, it's a cocktail of disasters, really. First off, the cars are getting a bit long in the tooth. The Model Y is over four years old now. In car years, that's practically ancient. It's like trying to sell a smartphone from the Stone Age. European buyers have looked at the shiny new offerings from BYD and Volkswagen and thought, "Ooh, that looks a bit tasty," leaving Tesla gathering dust.
Then there's the brand image. It seems the big boss's "political activities" haven't gone down too well with the environmentally conscious Europeans. Who would have thought? Alienating your core customer base is a bold strategy; let's see if it pays off. Spoiler alert: It isn't.

Is there any good news? If you squint really hard, sales in Italy and Spain are up about 70-75%. But that's coming from a base so small you'd need a microscope to see it. It's like celebrating finding a penny when you've just lost your wallet. The reality is, Tesla is staring down the barrel of three consecutive years of decline in Europe. The trajectory is accelerating downwards faster than a haggis rolling down Ben Nevis.
Is this the bottom? I wouldn't bet my last bottle of single malt on it. With more data yet to come from Germany, things could get even uglier. But at least the cars are still fast... Just a shame nobody wants to be buying them.
