Niu Goes Big for 2026

If you've ever seen me try to mount an off-road bike, you know it's like watching a toddler trying to climb a kitchen counter. And yet, knowing well I look silly - I still do it... So, when Niu Technologies announced they were getting serious about dirt, I had to take a closer look. Their 2026 XQi lineup is here, and it is clear as day that they have decided the "cute" is definitely last season. They want us to take them seriously as a proper motorcycle brand - a bold move for a company whose name sounds like a sneeze.

The star of the show is the XQi 500, and she is all grown-up. This is not a plaything for your backyard - it's a 125cc-equivalent beast that finally stops flirting with the term "motorcycle" and actually marries it. With 39 horsepower at its peak and a top speed of about 68 mph, it's fast enough to make your hair look like a bird's nest and your mother very concerned. And it even comes with dual-channel ABS and traction control.

The XQi 500 has a 19-inch wheel up front and an 18-inch wheel in the back, with a ground clearance of about 11.4 inches. That's enough to clear most rocks, though maybe not my ego. The seat height is a skyscraper-like 33.8 inches, which means if you're vertically challenged like yours truly, you'll be doing a lot of tip-toeing at stoplights. Oh - and it weighs in at a breezy 203 lbs with its 49-lb lithium-ion battery.

But the real question is: Will I make it home? The range is a modest 37 miles, and a full charge takes about four hours. You can ride it to a very nice brunch, talk about how much you love the environment for four hours, and then ride back. It's perfect! If you're feeling a bit more conservative, the XQi 400 is the middle child. It looks like its big sister but tops out at 62 mph while offering a more generous 62-mile range. It's also lighter, weighing around 172 lbs, making it much easier to pick up when you inevitably tip over in the driveway.

The entry point is the updated XQi 300, which is the glow-up we all deserve. It replaces the old XQi3 and brings adjustable suspension and better connectivity to the party. The off-road version hits about 56 mph, while the street-legal version focuses on getting you 50 miles on a full charge. All these bikes feature a decent 5-inch TFT display, NFC unlocking, and smartphone connectivity.

Niu is planning to drop the 400 and 500 models in the second half of 2026. The prices are still a bit of a "wait and see" game for the US market, but the tech is definitely looking up. Am I skeptical that a scooter company can conquer the dirt? A little. Am I excited to try and fail to climb a hill on one while looking good? You bet I am. It's zippy and it doesn't smell like a lawnmower - what's not to love?
