I've always said that what the electric vehicle market really needs - more than affordable hatchbacks or reliable charging infrastructure - is a four-wheeled tank that thinks it's a stealth fighter. Well, praise be to the mad gang at General Motors, because the 2026 GMC Hummer EV Carbon Fiber Edition is here, and it's arguably the most preposterous thing to hit the road since the invention of the unicycle.
I love a bit of madness. It keeps the blood pumping and the eyebrows raised. But slapping carbon fiber on a Hummer? Putting a diet soda next to a triple cheeseburger doesn't miraculously turn it into a "balanced meal," now does it? But it's an interesting exercise in irony.

This absolute unit of a vehicle can launch itself from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in a GM-estimated 2.8 seconds. That's right - that is faster than a Ferrari Enzo. Faster than a McLaren F1. The launch mode is called "Watts to Freedom," which sounds like a rejected Braveheart speech, but it works. The engineers have tickled the software on the tri-motor 3X powertrain to squeeze out 1,160 horsepower. A truck? Nah, this is a power station with windshield wipers.
The highlight of this special edition is, of course, the carbon fiber. You get 22-inch carbon fiber wheels, carbon fiber mirror caps, and a carbon fiber skid plate insert. When you're grinding a $120,000 truck over boulders, you definitely want to be scraping the world's fanciest plastic.

The idea is obvious - to save weight. But on a truck that tips the scales at nearly 9,000 pounds, shaving off a few pounds with a fancy weave works as well as tossing a deck chair off the Titanic to keep it afloat. It's a grand gesture, sure, but the iceberg is still winning.
To prove this wasn't just marketing bluster, GMC took this leviathan to the Texas Motor Speedway, where it proceeded to beat every supercar that was brave enough to race it. And the Hummer was also the camera car. Yup, when filming the promo, the stunt coordinator, Andrew Comrie-Picard, realized the Hummer was so fast they had to start it a car length behind the supercars just to keep the competitors in the frame.

Imagine being in a low-slung Italian exotic, pedal to the metal, sweating bullets, and looking in your rearview mirror to see a house bearing down on you, with a camera crew waving from the back seat. It's pure comedy.
During the testing, which took place in 90-degree heat (that's about 32 degrees for my sensible friends across the pond), the truck ran dozens of launches back-to-back. The battery stayed above a 90% charge, the air conditioning was blasting, and the camera operators in the back were probably sipping iced lattes. No degradation. No overheating. Only relentless, terrifying speed.

How much is a physics-defying monument to excess these days? The base 3X trim sits around $107,000, adding the Carbon Fiber goodies pushes the price tag up to roughly $122,000 - a lot of cheddar for a truck that is too wide for a parking space and too fast for your own good. But you know what? I love it. It's a 1,160-horsepower middle finger to the laws of physics, wrapped in carbon fiber. If that's the electric future - I'm in.
