You've seen the Aptera, right? It's a three-wheeler that looks like a high-tech egg had a disagreement with a flight of stairs and lost a wheel in the process. This three-wheeled "Solar Electric Vehicle" (sEV) claims it can run on nothing but the California sunshine. It's optimistic, it's ambitious, and a wee bit mad. But then again, so was the man who first thought of deep-frying a candy bar, and look how that turned out for Scotland.
Our friends in Carlsbad just closed a $9 million equity raise. In the world of automotive manufacturing, $9 million is roughly what Porsche spends on the leather stitching for a single weekend's production run. It's a drop in the sea, really. To get this cash, Aptera had to pull a bit of a "canny" move on the Nasdaq, issuing shares at $2.00 each. That was a brutal 17% discount from the previous day's price - but hey, $9 million is $9 million, and it means the dream of a "never-charge" car isn't dead yet.

The vehicle itself is a fascinating bit of kit. It's a two-seater that's about 14.7 feet long and 7.3 feet wide - that's wider than many delivery vans. What makes it hilarious is when you realize it only has three wheels. Under that carbon-fiber skin - lighter than my auntie Agnes's fruitcake - sits a 42 kWh battery in the Launch Edition. Aptera promises a range of 400 miles on a full charge - that's enough to get you from New York City to Richmond, Virginia, with enough juice left to find a half-decent burger. For the brave (and wealthy), Aptera says a 1,000-mile range version is coming.
Aptera's looks might be a bit misleading - in reality, it is far from being a slow-moving greenhouse. The front-wheel-drive version will hit 60 mph in under 6 seconds, while the all-wheel-drive beast supposedly does it in 4 seconds flat. But the party piece is its outer skin covered in solar panels. Aptera claims it harvests enough "free" energy to add 40 miles of range per day. If you live in Southern California, you might never plug this trike in. If you live in the Highlands, where the sun is a myth told to frighten children, you'll probably still be reaching for the Tesla-style NACS plug.

Right now, the factory floor is buzzing - or at least vibrating gently. There are six validation builds currently under assembly, with four more to follow. These first units are the "production-intent" blueprints. The co-CEOs, Chris Anthony and Steve Fambro, are hustling like a Glasgow street performer, using every penny of that $9 million (plus a $21 million California grant) to prove the solar dream can actually be built at scale. The plan is for the first customer deliveries to start by the end of 2026 - a tight timeline for sure.
Will we see these three-wheeled giant ostrich eggs on the road? By all means - this is still a massive gamble. But Aptera has got all the tech, now it has the cash, and a design that makes a Prius look like a Victorian tractor. I'm as skeptical as ever, but I really hope they can pull it off.
