Your Toaster, Your Toothbrush, and... Your New Motorcycle?

Many, many years of kicking tires and sniffing exhaust fumes (and now, listening for the gentle hum of a lithium-ion battery) will eventually make you complacent. And so, I got lulled into this weird safety zone where I thought I'd seen it all. Guilty as charged. I thought nothing could surprise me when it comes to electric motorcycles. But buying a brand-new, honest-to-goodness motorcycle on Amazon? That's a new one, even for me.

It seems our friends in India are living in the future. A company called Oben Electric has decided that the traditional dealership experience, with its fluorescent lighting and slightly-too-eager salespeople, is a bit last season. Their solution? To put their latest electric motorcycle, the Rorr EZ, on the world's biggest digital shelf, right next to the air fryers and yoga mats. I have to admit, the idea of it makes me giggle.

When you hear "motorcycle on Amazon," you might be picturing something with the structural integrity of a cardboard box and the oomph of a startled hamster. A toy for kiddos. I certainly did. But Oben isn't some fly-by-night operation slapping imported parts together. Founded in Bengaluru back in 2020, this company actually designs its own goodies and holds over 25 patents. They're serious, even if their sales strategy sounds adventurous.

What exactly are you getting for your click? The Oben Rorr EZ is a zippy little commuter that seems to punch well above its weight. It gets from 0 to 25 mph in a respectable 3.3 seconds. That's more than enough to get the jump on traffic when the light turns green. It'll top out at 59 mph, which is perfect for darting around the city. And with a torque of 38.4 lb-ft, it has enough grunt to feel lively.

The real headline-grabber, though, is the price. The Rorr EZ comes in two flavors. There's a model with a 3.4 kWh battery for around $1,440, and a slightly beefier 4.4 kWh version for about $1,560. No, I did not miss a zero. That's a brand-new electric motorcycle for the price of a fancy laptop. The bigger battery promises a range of up to 109 miles, which is a whole lot of commuting before you need to plug it in.

The battery chemistry is a subject that usually sends people to sleep, but stick with me! The Rorr EZ uses a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery. In plain English, this is the good stuff. LFP batteries are the stoic, sensible friend in the battery world. They don't get as hot and bothered in high temperatures – a massive plus for the scorching Indian summers – and they last longer. It's a thoughtful piece of engineering that shows Oben is building for the real world, not just for a spec sheet.

Naturally, a bike aimed at young, tech-savvy riders has to come with some digital toys. The Rorr EZ is packed with them. You get GPS-based geo-fencing (so you can digitally tell your bike not to wander off), theft alerts sent to your phone, and even brake assist. It's a motorcycle that's also a clever gadget, which seems to be the direction everything is heading these days.

It's a handsome-looking thing, too, in a clean, modern way. And you can get it in some truly delightful colors. Forget boring black; you can choose from Surge Cyan, Electro Amber, Lumina Green, and Photon White. I think I'm partial to Surge Cyan myself – it just sounds like it's ready for an adventure.

The biggest fear with buying a vehicle online is, "What happens when something goes wrong?" Oben is offering an optional extended warranty of 8 years or 50,000 miles for about $120. And it's transferable! That's an incredible amount of peace of mind for less than the cost of a few fancy dinners.

To back it all up, Oben's plan is to open 150 showrooms across India, all with their own service centers. So, you can have the convenience of buying from your couch, with the security of knowing a real human can help you if your Amazon-delivered motorcycle needs a little TLC. It really is a brilliant blend of the digital and the physical world. And it makes you wonder why more companies aren't trying it.
