Erzberg Just Got Quiet (But the Panic is Loud)

You know that sound when you turn the key in a massive, naturally aspirated V8, and the Earth shakes just a little bit? That's the sound of my soul singing. I love noise. I love the smell of gasoline. I love the feeling of tiny explosions propelling me forward at speeds that would make my mother faint. But lately, I've been dating the silent type. And by "dating," I mean I've been spending an inordinate amount of time writing about electric vehicles.

Usually, they are sensible, quiet, and efficient - like a librarian who does yoga. But today, we are talking about something that is less "librarian" and more "librarian who secretly fights in a cage match on weekends." The Red Bull Erzbergrodeo - essentially the Hunger Games for motorcycles - has just rewritten its rulebook for 2026 to let the electric Stark Varg play with the gas-guzzling big boys.

What’s Erzbergrodeo? It is an annual attempt to murder motorcycles using nothing but geology. Taking place in an Austrian iron ore mine (ominously nicknamed the "Iron Giant"), it makes other enduros look like a trip to the grocery store.

Earlier last year, the Stark Varg EX model was cleared to run the Red Bull Romaniacs. And Romaniacs is "one of the hardest" enduros. But Erzberg? Erzberg is the hardest. Period. It is the sort of place where gravity feels personal. In 2015, out of 500 starters, only five finished. Five. That is a 1% success rate. You have better odds of finding a working ice cream machine at McDonald's.

And now, for the first time, the 2026 regulations say that electric bikes can line up right next to the screaming two-strokes and thumping four-strokes. No "participation trophy" class, no separate kiddie table. They are running side-by-side.

What exactly is this battery-powered Braveheart? The Stark Varg is not a toy. I've looked at the specs, and they are terrifying in the best way possible. We are talking about a motorbike that weighs in at a svelte 260 pounds (give or take a mud clod), and pushes out 80 horsepower - that is about 30% more power than a standard 450cc gas bike, which usually weighs the same or more. But that's not the best bit. The best part is that it has 692 lb-ft of torque. Yes - and it accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 3.3 seconds.

Basically, it is a cruise missile with handlebars. The battery is a 7.2 kWh unit (on the latest models), and the whole package costs between $12,900 and $13,900. It's not cheap, but neither is therapy, which you will need after riding it.

That's all well and good, but batteries die. Gas bikes just drink and go. And as impressive as the Varg sounds, the Red Bull Hare Scramble is about 22 miles long. It sounds like a short commute until you realize it takes four hours and involves vertical rock walls. It is 22 miles of absolute hell. Even the gas bikes run dry. So, to make this fair - or as fair as anything can be when you are trying to drive up a cliff face - Erzbergrodeo is allowing battery swapping.

Unlike the combustion crowd, who will be frantically pouring liquids into tanks, the electric riders can enlist their service crews to physically swap the battery at the designated service point. It's like changing the batteries in your TV remote, only the remote is covered in mud, and everyone is screaming at you in German. Organizers are also setting up emission-free charging stations in the Erzbergrodeo Arena and another powered spot up on the mountain. It seems they have thought of everything, except maybe installing an escalator for the riders.

Karl Katoch, the Founder and CEO of the Red Bull Erzbergrodeo - a man who I assume eats gravel for breakfast - is surprisingly smitten. He said, "The Stark Varg is special to me because it is the world's first production off-road sports motorcycle that is competitive in almost every current competition." He even admitted to having one in his garage, saying it has taken a "permanent place" there. When the guy who designed the world's cruelest motorcycle race buys your bike, you are probably doing something right.

The Stark Varg is eligible for the Rocket Ride and the Open Class during qualification. But the big question is: Will we see an electric bike cross the finish line? I have faith in the machine. And I certainly have faith in the riders. Eddie Karlsson and Toby Martyn are factory riders for Stark, and having seen Eddie ride, I can confirm the man is a wizard. He even won the Silver Class at the 2025 Red Bull Romaniacs.

But Erzberg is a different beast. It eats clutches and shatters egos. If a Stark Varg finishes this race within the four-hour limit, it won't just be a win for Stark - it will be the moment the electric dirt bike officially arrives. No asterisks, no "good for an electric bike" qualifiers. Just a finisher in the toughest race on Earth. Personally, I'm rooting for them. Mostly because I want to see the look on the gas riders' faces when they get passed by something that sounds like a very angry blender.
